The Role of the Solvent in Chemical Reactions by E. Buncel,

The Role of the Solvent in Chemical Reactions by E. Buncel,
The Oxford Chemistry Masters series is designed to provide clear and concise accounts of important topics - both established and emergent - that may be encountered by chemistry students as they progress from the senior undergraduate stage through postgraduate study to leadership in research. These Masters assume little prior knowledge, other than the foundations provided by an undergraduate degree in chemistry, and lead the reader through to an appreciation of the state of the art in the topic whilst providing an entree to the original literature in the field. The role of the solvent in chemical reactions is one of immediate and daily concern to the practising chemist. Whether in the laboratory, or in industry, most reactions are carried out in the liquid phase. In the majority of these, one or two reacting components, or reagents, are dissolved in a suitable medium and the reaction is allowed to take place. Given the importance of solvent, the need for an in-depth understanding of this topic is obvious. However, many inorganic and organic chemistry texts only make passing references to solvents, or worse still, fail to mention that a given reaction takes place in a particular solvent at all. This book successfully addresses the gap in our understanding of solvent chemistry, and brings the role of the solvent rightly to the fore. The book begins with a summary of essential thermodynamic and kinetic facts, emphasizing aspects of these fields, where relevant, to reactions in solution. Chapter 2 introduces the reader to the role of the solvent purely as a medium, touching on early theories based on electrostatic considerations (Born and Kirkwood-Onsager) and the solubility parameter(Hildebrand). Chapter 3 discusses the role of solvent as an active participant, chiefly through hydrogen bonding, Bronsted-Lowry and Lewis acid-base interactions, including hard and soft acids and bases.

Chemical Kinetics and Catalysis by Richard I. Masel,
Chemical Kinetics and Catalysis by Richard I. Masel,
A textbook for kinetics in the twenty-first century CHEMICAL KINETICS AND CATALYSIS Chemical kinetics is important for understanding a number of processes, including how food is metabolized, how pharmaceuticals function in a biological system, and how pollutants produced by gasoline combustion are converted for release into the atmosphere. The revolution in computational modeling necessitates an updated text that maintains the relevant traditional background while introducing novel computational methods. Chemical Kinetics and Catalysis meets this challenge and provides an appropriate text for the next generation of scientists in this field. The advent of accurate graphing programs has all but eliminated the use of complex methods to fit data to appropriate rate equations. Within the framework of the traditional theories of kinetics and catalysis, Masel adds explanations of computational graphing programs, numerous solved examples, and problems. This comprehensive text covers: Introduction to kinetics via rate equations and mechanismsTheory of reaction rates with a section on utilizing trajectory calculations to simulate reactionsPrediction of potential energy surfaces including methods for directing the reaction rateExamination of catalysis, particularly how solvents, metals, and oxides can be used to modify the potential energy surface for reactions and thereby modify reaction rates Chemical Kinetics and Catalysis is an indispensable tool for both students and researchers in engineering, chemistry, and biochemistry. Additional problems and solutions are available at www.wiley.

Science Oxford - Science Oxford (SO) is a modern science gallery in Oxford. Set up and managed by The Oxford Trust, it is the scientific equivalent of an Arts centre.

Museum of the History of Science, Oxford - The Museum of the History of Science, located in Broad Street, Oxford, is home to a collection of historic scientific instruments and is the world's oldest surviving purpose-built museum building.

Chemical kinetics - In physical chemistry, chemical kinetics or reaction kinetics study reaction rates in a chemical reaction. Analysing the influence of different reaction conditions on the reaction rate gives information about the reaction mechanism and the transition state of a chemical reaction.

Christian Science Journal - The Christian Science Journal is an official monthly publication of the Church of Christ, Scientist through the Christian Science Publishing Society, founded in 1883 by Mary Baker Eddy. Written chiefly for Christian Scientists, as opposed to the Christian Science Sentinel and Christian Science Herald, it includes articles written from a metaphysical angle of Christian Science, with editorials, church news items, testimonies of healing, and listings of Christian Science churches, practitioners, nurses, and Committees on Publication.
