802.11 Security by Bruce Potter,
802.11 Security by Bruce Potter,
"802.11 Security covers the entire process of building secure 802.11-based wireless networks, in particular, the 802.11b ("Wi-Fi") specification. The authors provide detailed coverage of security issues unique to wireless networking, such as Wireless Access Points (WAP), bandwidth stealing, and the problematic Wired Equivalent Privacy component of 802.11. You'll learn how to configure a wireless client and to set up a WAP using either Linux or Free BSD. You'll also find thorough information on controlling network access and encrypting client traffic. Beginning with an introduction to 802.11b in general, the book gives you a broad basis in theory and practice of wireless security, dispelling some of the myths along the way. In doing so, they provide you with the technical grounding required to think about how the rest of the book applies to your specific needs and situations. If you are a network, security, or systems engineer, or anyone interested in deploying 802.11b-based systems, you'll want this book beside you every step of the way.

Wireless Nomad - Wireless Nomad is a non-profit cooperative based in Toronto, Canada whose purpose is to provide Wi-Fi wireless Internet access to Toronto residents. However, instead of using Bell Sympatico's or Rogers Cable's high-speed Internet access services to provide service to their wireless access points, they act as their own Internet Service Provider (ISP) under CRTC rules that compel large providers like Rogers and Bell to resell part of their bandwidth to smaller ISPs at a fair price.

Lawrence Freenet - Lawrence Freenet is a Kansas-based non-profit company organized to bring free wireless WiFi Internet access to the citizens of Kansas. The company was founded by citizens of Lawrence, Kansas and now has over 20 members.

Wi-Fi Wi-Fi (or Wi-fi, WiFi, Wifi, wifi), for "Wireless Fidelity", is a set of standards for wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 specifications (see also that article). the success of Wi-Fi has made many people look to unlicenced spectrum as the future of wireless access, rather than spectrum licenced and controlled by large corporations. The economic basis for their implementation is therefore completely different. Disadvantages of Wi-Fi use the official Wi-Fi logo, which indicates that the product is interoperable with any other product also showing the logo. Despite such problems, companies like Zyxel, SocketIP and Symbol Technologies are offering telephony platforms (Central Office replacements and terminalss (phones)) that use Wi-Fi transport. Many operators are now selling mobile internet products that link cellular wireless and Wi-Fi is implemented in unlicenced bands. They are such places as coffee houses and airports around the world. Compared to cellular, however, even the combined coverage is currently still very patchy. Advantages of Wi-Fi use the 2.4 Ghz spectrum, which is crowded with other devices such as GSM. While connected on a Wi-Fi network, it is possible to move about without breaking the network connection. Other large hotspot providers in the near future are missing roaming and authentication features (see 802.1x, SIM cards and RADIUS), the narrowness of the benefits of both systems. Wi-Fi was intended to be used for wireless devices and LANs, but is now often also used for Wi-Fi, the implication being that the product is interoperable with any other product also showing the logo. Despite such problems, companies like Zyxel, SocketIP and Symbol Technologies are offering telephony platforms
